IMAPI’S ACTIVITY

IMAPI seeks to become the NGO with technical capacities for a broader representation of society, and to raise the awareness among the different stakeholders about the importance of preserving the natural and cultural resources of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu and the Region of Cusco. It also seeks to highlight the importance of developing economic activities in a sustainable way, with the intention to implement stronger measures for its conservation and build constituencies (building consensus among stakeholders) that will help in the conservation of biodiversity of the region. Making “things work” at the HSMP will establish an excellent precedent for other areas, a necessary model of inter-institutional and multi-stakeholder success that is badly needed given the complex inter-institutional and inter-sectoral conflicts present in other areas of the corridor.

IMAPI’s activities mainly focus in the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu and the buffer zones initially Sanctuary as well as the population with productive capacities within the region of Cusco.  These buffer areas encompass rural populations found inside the borders of the Sanctuary along the Cusichaca and Aobamba rivers as well as the population (migrant & resident) of the village of Machu Picchu Pueblo and its areas of influence.

IMAPI has designed several projects and programs that are being presented for funding to international cooperation institutions and NGO’s whose implementation will be based upon financial support. These are pilot demonstration projects that show examples of ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable methods to recover the natural ecological and cultural characteristics of the area. These will include the promotion of initiatives that enhance historic land use patterns that are based on the ancient cultural values of the inhabitants of the area, maximizing the conservation of indigenous knowledge about sustainable biodiversity use, and with the support and participation of universities and other research centers.
