A Master Plan. The management
of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary is directed by its
Master Plan. The Master Plan for 1998-2003 was
approved by law and guides the development of any activity
that takes place inside the Sanctuary and its buffer zone.
In the development of the Master Plan, various institutions
participated. The Regional Government of Cusco –CTAR,
Machu Picchu Program of PROFONANPE, personnel from
INRENA ( National Resources Institute ) and INC,
Institute of National Culture the Foreign Affairs
Ministry, CONAM ( National council of the Environment
). as well as other private and public institutions,
including the Universidad San Antonio de Abad ( UNSAAC
).

Management Unit. The Management
Unit of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary (Unidad de Gestión
de Machu Picchu - UGM) is in charge of the integrated
management of the HSMP and to direct the implementation
of the strategies conceived in the Master Plan of the
Sanctuary. The Management Unit has a governing board made
up of the National Institute of Natural Resources (INRENA),
the National Institute of Culture (INC), the Vice
Minister of Tourism, the President of the Regional Government
of Cusco, the latter two having been recently integrated
by pressure brought about through the private sector and
NGO’s, including authorities.

Management Committee. This is a mechanism created
by the law of Natural Protected Areas to ensure that the
Management of a Protected Area has a monitoring and support
system of the society at large to guarantee the supervision
of the implementation of the Master Plan. IMAPI
is promoting the expansion of the Management Committee
(Comité de Gestión) to include a broader representation
of stakeholders. We will promote and enhance the participation
of other stakeholder that right now are not participating
(public and private sector).
