Management of the SHMP

The management of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary relies on 3 instruments:

  • A Master Plan. The management of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary is directed by its Master Plan. The Master Plan for 1998-2003 was approved by law and guides the development of any activity that takes place inside the Sanctuary and its buffer zone. In the development of the Master Plan, various institutions participated. The Regional Government of Cusco –CTAR, Machu Picchu Program of PROFONANPE, personnel from INRENA ( National Resources Institute ) and INC, Institute of National Culture  the Foreign Affairs Ministry, CONAM ( National council of the Environment ). as well as other  private and public institutions, including the Universidad San Antonio de Abad ( UNSAAC ).

  • A Management Unit. The Management Unit of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary (Unidad de Gestión de Machu Picchu - UGM) is in charge of the integrated management of the HSMP and to direct the implementation of the strategies conceived in the Master Plan of the Sanctuary. The Management Unit has a governing board made up of the National Institute of Natural Resources (INRENA), the National Institute of Culture (INC), the Vice Minister of Tourism, the President of the Regional Government of Cusco, the latter two having been recently integrated by pressure brought about through the private sector and NGO’s, including authorities.

  • A Management Committee. This is a mechanism created by the law of Natural Protected Areas to ensure that the Management of a Protected Area has a monitoring and support system of the society at large to guarantee the supervision of the implementation of the Master Plan. IMAPI is promoting the expansion of the Management Committee (Comité de Gestión) to include a broader representation of stakeholders. We will promote and enhance the participation of other stakeholder that right now are not participating (public and private sector).
