Introduction

The long-term sustainability of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary and its critical natural, cultural, and historical heritage are at risk because of the lack of capacity and awareness of the key stakeholders responsible for its management. IMAPI has been formed to support the implementation of the Master Plan of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary by executing and monitoring natural and cultural resource management plans, resolving social and conservation conflicts, and developing experiences that can be replicated in other protected areas in Peru.

It is our goal for Machu Picchu to become an icon that represents a viable model for the management of protected areas, thus strengthening the national protected areas system. A central philosophy of IMAPI’s work is the strong and direct involvement of local communities and stakeholders in the decision-making processes at local and national levels, thus building capacity while delivering conservation results through consensus and a shared vision by its members.
